Our ProgrammeFood For Thought is part of the Green Earth Appeal which was set up with very a simple goal - To help the environment. GreenEarthAppeal.org, which is a partner of the United Nations Environment Programme, achieves this through the promotion of renewable energy and tree planting.
The Food For Thought Programme is an extension of the Green Earth Appeal and continues to promote helping the environment by working with restaurateurs, allowing them to reduce the carbon footprint of their businesses without having to spend any money. No matter what your views may be about global warming, you have to agree that planting trees can only be good for the environment. As a partner of the UNEP we work closely with charities who work in rural communities in Africa and South America supplying trees which can be used to harvest food. Through seed distribution, agroforestry training, and our country programs, we are empowering rural groups to restore tree cover to their lands. Planting trees protects the environment and helps to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures for generations, while at the same time absorbing Co2 removing it from the environment. In communal forests, tree planting programs focus on large-scale reforestation and the promotion of non-timber forest products. In agricultural fields, fast-growing multipurpose tree species are integrated into the agricultural system for specific functions such as a windbreak, firebreak, woodlot, living fence, contour-planting for erosion control, and alley-cropping to improve soil fertility. All this for just 99p on the cost of a meal for 2, 4 or even 6 people.
