Burundi

Programme Summary

The planting of 1,000,000 trees during 2009 in four provinces of Burnundi represented breakthrough partnerships between Hutu and Tutsi men, women and children, overcoming profound historical, political and ethnic conflicts. Starting from absolutely nothing, but with a hope, a dream in mind, this critical mission to restore peace and prosperity via integration, education, the reclaiming and restoring of land and the generation of food and income. More than 100,000 in no less than five provinces will benefit from the planting as these trees will enhance much needed nutrition.

Cameroon

Programme Summary

Exciting work was initiated in the early 1990s with 60 farmer groups in the Northwest Province of Cameroon and nearly 170,000 trees planted in the Kumbo area.  2008 saw partnering organisations working throughout 3 Provinces, with meetings and agro forestry training with farmers, schools, NGOs and community groups, massive quantities of tree seeds were disseminated and over 2 million trees were planted this year with over 2000 farmers! In addition, partnering organisations are developing a School Forest Garden program and are currently working with 8 schools in the Southwest Province. More recently the program has initiated formal collaboration with Municipalities in the Western Highlands region to tackle critical watershed management problems.

Ethiopia

Programme Summary

Inspired by the news of successful partnership working during 2009 in the Guraghe zone, 102,950 coffee growers, processors and exporters from the Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union in the southern and western part of Ethiopia were targeted for partnership working. A further 250,000 community members will be involved in tree planting and the implementation of systems to restore productivity to counter abject poverty in three more communities in the northern part of Ethiopia.

Ghana

Programme Summary

With the unrelenting efforts of partners and the dissemination of large quantities of seeds, farmers, associations and local NGOs worked together to reach a goal of 250,000 trees during the initial rainy season. Altogether, 18 agroforestry workshops were organized and held: four regional workshops; six community level workshops; six Tree Pals program workshops, and two main KITA Alumni training workshops. 164 women and 147 men were involved in all of the training programs. Moreover, an estimated 450 students were instructed on the importance of tree planting and they became involved in nursery preparations in their schools and communities

Kenya

Programme Summary

Intensive work between 2008 and April 2009 saw our partner’s network grow to 17 organizations. By the end of October 2009, the number of the groups developed had increased to more than 40. In addition, the number of seedlings that are projected to be planted this year should increase by over 200%, from 300,000 planted in 2008 to 1,000,000 planted in 2009. The welcome rains in December 2009 are expected to continue throughout January 2010, giving plenty of time to plant hundreds of thousands of trees.

Senegal

Programme Summary

The beginning of 2009 and the welcome rainy season allowed for great success with the project in Senegal.  Partnering organisations worked with over 200 farmers and Peace Corps volunteers in 17 villages to plant trees throughout the region of Kaffrine. Large quantities of tree seeds were also provided to Kaffrine’s Eaux et Fôret department as well as a number of local organisations for their own tree planting projects. The program also successfully expanded to the Southeast region of Kedougou where work with local farmers and Peace Corps volunteers to develop agroforestry projects was put into action.  Improvements to the agroforestry demonstration site was used to train farmers and further improve the economic prospects for communities now and in the future.

Tanzania

Programme Summary

The program in Tanzania started in 2008 and since then has distributed well over half a million seeds. By December 2009 The Ngara Jatropha Fondation in Bukoba Region was engaged in distributing hundreds of thousands of Jatropha seedlings as well as other species of trees throughout Ngara District. Thanks to successful partnerships with community groups, sympathetic organisations and Peace Corps it was projected that 800,000 trees be planted by the year’s end.

Uganda

Programme Summary

During 2009 the Uganda Program distributed a fantastic 500,000 seedlings throughout Uganda, with an additional 250,000 seedlings in nurseries. Organisations are constantly asking for seeds and support, as the Uganda Program continues to expand. The first quarter during 2009 demonstrated the great potential that partnering organisations have in implementing tree planting projects with local NGO's and Community-Based Organizations (CBO's). There is real potential that the Uganda Program will be the most successful program in the East Africa Region in terms of number of trees planted.
